Massenet's 'Werther',

Covent Garden's revival of Massenet's Werther (seen 14 May 2011) was much talked about because it was Rolando Villazón's return to the Covent Garden stage following his recent vocal problems. For me, interest also lay in Benoit Jacquot's production which I had missed when it was new in 2004. Jacquot and designers Charles Edwards (sets) and Christian Gasc (costumes) gave Werther a highly detailed setting, seemingly influenced in look by the nineteenth century Danish school of painters, with much cool realism...
