Wonderfully Smoochy

The Royal Philharmonic's
Gershwin celebration in Nottingham,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's Gershwin celebration made a delightful extra following the end of the subscription concert series at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall (Nottingham, UK, 1 June 2011), and a sure-fire fund-raiser for Macmillan Cancer Support. With Andrew Litton on ebullient form as conductor, pianist and compère, and the RPO presenting its thoroughly convincing credentials as a Broadway pit band, it was a perfect sit-back-and-enjoy-the-ride evening.

Oddly though, it didn't include a single piece as Gershwin left it, apart from Rhapsody in blue (and even that's arguable)...
