It is a bold enough gesture to record all the Beethoven sonatas; but to throw in also the Liszt arrangements of the nine symphonies hints at keyboard diablerie of quite unusual daring. Here we have symphonies 5 and 7, with the Hammerklavier sonata outlasting both of them as symphonic deputy on the third disc. I used to thunder away in the symphonies in my youthful pianistic days; but I would never have attempted Lizst. It is rumoured that Wagner danced his way through No 7 to Liszt's accompaniment during his last days in Venice. It is unsurprising that he died soon after...
