Sound Sites!

<< Continued from page 4

Up to Karlsruhe, Deutschland next to Sabine Schäfer and the Topophonien installations. Sabine has worked in electronic and computer-realized music for nearly 20 years. Her Topophonien Project, featuring three-dimensional sound installation - 'raummusik', has been continuing for 10 years. This knock-out site features a wealth of information on her work and the work of her collaborator Sukandar Kartadinata, the 'informatics' expert who realizes the technology that Topophonien engages.

An article on Art & Technology by Detlef Schmid explores a few points that are ongoing issues with eMuse readers. Also look for a well-written piece by Rolf H. Funck on Sound Landscapes. The site is comprehensive, the graphic design smart and clean. Only missing is a listing of most recent activities.

We'll make our final visit today to the Art AND Technology website. Featured here are numerous artists, each with a different take on the uses of technology in art. The work shown is uneven, but some of the pieces are definitely worth the stop. Sara Garden Armstrong has a particularly strong showing with Airplayers Bookwork. These are elegant, limited edition, book-sized multimedia works featuring container, book, video and sculpture.

Ron Kuivila, mentioned above, has a very strong conceptual showing here in a literally shocking piece. The Spark Armonica is a 12,000 volt powered glass harmonica. Sonics are produced by the unique sound of crackling electricity and the resultant resonance of the charged wine glasses - ZAP!

We'll end on a more tortured look at technology selected especially for those who have not had enough techno-abuse at the hands of their own PC's and Macs: don't miss Steven Geiger's Auto Flagellator a work featuring steel, video camera, video monitor, electric motor, riding crops, canvas, electric components and 3-D scanning bed. Oh yes, my droogies: the installation would not be complete without the included Whipping Station, 58" high x 51" wide x 31" deep!

Roaring off to the cyber-sunset down Info Highway 66, the eMuse Thunderbird express rips out across the burnin' land. From the few good hits we'll notch our barrels, the shots well-taken, the sites well-seen. Dust-billowed flash of heaving hot metal, rubber burnin', tires sceechin', top torn down - we'll say so long to this clean, well-lit screen. Adios amigos til next we hit the techno-road!
