<< -- 7 -- Roderic Dunnett LUCIANO CHAILLY

Chailly's almost Dadaist appetitite for experimentalism, inspired perhaps
(as many other writers and artists were)
by the early twentieth century linguistic researches
and word-games of Marinetti, led him to compose an intriguing
short cantata, Tiadele-Mo, based on African Pygmy texts, for baritone,
choir and percussive small ensemble. An amusing recent work is his prizewinning
late choral piece La testa malcontenta, which won first prize at
the Seventh International Composition Concourse of the Federation of Trentino
Choirs in 1992. Chailly composed for every kind of instrument -- trumpet,
percussion, mandolin -- and made a typically fine arrangement for three guitars
of Mozart's C minor Fantasia.

One (No 9) of the Sonate Tritematiche,
Chailly's series of major orchestral and chamber works of the 1950s,
was converted into a ballet, Il Cappio (Naples, 1962). His orchestral
work Sequenze dell'Artide (1960) provided material for yet another
new ballet, Shee, performed by the Australian Ballet in Melbourne
in 1967.
