<<  -- 5 --  Maria Nockin    RIVER SPIRITS

-------------------------------

Florencia sings of her desire to be re-united with her lover of long ago, Cristóbal, a butterfly hunter. Rosalba, the writer, loses her notebook overboard but it is fished out for her by Arcadio, and they begin to see that they have a few things in common. While playing cards they realize that they might fall in love. Later, the older couple, Paula and Alvaro, sit down for dinner but they cannot agree on what to order.

A violent storm [listen -- CD1 track 8, 3:34-4:18 and track 9, 0:00-0:37] comes up unexpectedly and the ship is carried down river by the current as pink rain pours down. Alvaro falls overboard in an attempt to save the vessel from being crushed by falling trees. Riolobo implores the river gods to stop the destruction and Arcadio takes the helm but runs the ship aground at the close of Act I.
