<<  -- 6 --  Maria Nockin    RIVER SPIRITS

-------------------------------

Act II begins with the calm after the storm [listen -- CD2 track 1, 0:00-1:26]. Florencia sings of her deliverance while it is still dark. Daybreak is then seen and heard in the orchestra as Rosalba and Arcadio find each other realizing that they are falling in love whether they want to or not. The captain is found to be alive and Alvaro is revived. At that point both Paula and her husband realize that they could still love each other if they conquered their pride.

After the storm, the travelers gather on deck, transformed by their brush with death: (from left) Riolobo (Mark S Doss), El Capitán (Oren Gradus), Florencia Grimaldi (Patricia Schuman), Rosalba (Ana Maria Martinez), Arcadio (Chad Shelton), Alvaro (Hector Vasquez) and Paula (Suzanna Guzmán). The opera ends [listen -- CD2 track 7, 9:58-11:47] on a bittersweet note as Florencia, instead of singing at the Manaus opera house, metamorphoses into a rare butterfly, finally finds with her true love, Cristóbal.
