<<  -- 5 --  Tess Crebbin    CELLO AND SUSHI

-------------------------------

TC: You don't mind?

DI: I love to travel and to see new places, explore new cultures. I think this is very fascinating and exciting. I am very happy that it is part of my job to be on the road so much.

TC: No doubt, you will have occasion to do so a lot in future. You are considered to be one of the best young cellists in Germany these days, and so I am curious to know what, in your opinion, makes a good cellist?

DI: Of course you have to be able to play your instrument well and to deal with all the technical problems that you are going to encounter. But that is not all there is to being a good musician. There is something that you have to tell the people with your playing, and that is also important to keep in mind. You are not just there to play off the notes. Your listeners should have the feeling at the end of your concert that something inside them has been touched and changed. They should have a great experience that they will never forget. I love people to have that kind of experience which will provide them with some unforgettable moments.

TC: What makes the cello special for achieving this effect, in your opinion?

DI: I love the cello very much as an instrument because it has such a wide range. I love its colors, the tone you can get from a good cello, its registers. You can do so many things on it and it is actually very close to the human voice. There is a beautiful sound to a cello that just moves you so much. With all the different moods you can create with a cello, the instrument can almost be like an actor impersonating different characters. It has a personality of its own and I really love this.

TC: Do you have any favorite cello works?

DI: I must admit that I really love the Shostakovich concertos or Rachmaninov's Op 19, but whenever I play anything I am so much inside the music that it just feels as though whatever I am playing at the time is the greatest work on earth.
