-------------------------------

Contrast the vocal quality of Holten's arrangement of a Finnish folk song Tuoll' on mun kultani (Yonder my Sweetheart) [listen -- track 5, 0:54-2:02] with Mäntyjärvi's popular untranslatable Pseudo-Yoik in which that harsher folk style is superbly captured [listen -- track 4, 0:00-0:51] and which, like several pieces on this splendid CD, has been specially arranged for Talla.

Laulusild (Song Bridge) by Tormis, based on chants of the Kalevala tradition was written in 1981 in anticipation of the opening of Soviet Estonia to the West [listen -- track 8, 1:12-2:10], and Jukka Linkola, a composer with a jazz background, wrote his five-movement Mieliteko-sarja (Urge Suite) specially for this fascinating male voice 'SATB' ensemble. The first movement gives its title to the album (Punapaula -- Red Ribbon) and the third is based on the song Kukapa se saunan lämmittäisi -- Who would heat the sauna! [listen -- track 15, 0:00-0:59].

I must admit to being completely captivated by this recording, and recommend it with great enthusiasm.
