<<  -- 2 --  Patric Standford    A PRODIGIOUS COMPOSER

-------------------------------

When the Air Moves is described as a short orchestral essay, also dated 2003, which rises from its quiet opening to an interaction of rhythmic games, only to fold itself away into a still distance.

The third work on this disc dates from 1986 -- a symphony for strings entitled And Five Quartets, in which string quartets are distributed around the performance area and given brittle rhythmic tasks that make exciting contrapuntal conflicts [listen -- track 6, 0:00-1:15]. It is worth a visit to the website (www.classicalcds.net, then click Soundspells) to review the thirty or more CDs of his music currently available. He was a fine teacher, wonderful jazz clarinettist and painter, and above all rightly described by all who are familiar with his work as a prodigious composer.
