The remainder of the cast was pretty strong. Elizabeth Gale, as Berta, got her Act 2 aria and delivered it very well. She also managed to triumph over a false nose and exaggerated costume which made her look like an animated cartoon character. Raymond Aceto was a typical Don Basilio, all funny walks and long hair. I could have wished that his voice has a little more focus but he gave a strongly characterised account of his La calumnia aria.

Musically the piece was in the excellent hands of Mark Elder who is proving to have a secure, but light touch when it comes to Rossini's music. The orchestra was reduced in numbers somewhat, the pit raised and the wind placed so that they could see the stage. The results were crisp and sparkling, a real delight. It is something of a curiosity that to hear Mark Elder (ex musical director of English National Opera) conduct opera, we must go to the Royal Opera House not the Coliseum; but when the results are as stunning as this I shan't complain.
