Paul Charles Clarke was announced as ill, which was a shame. He was obviously husbanding his resources but gave a truly committed performance and was resounding in the final scenes. I would be interested to hear him when he is well, to see how he places this tricky role in his voice.

Anne-Sophie Duprels was a lovely Teresa; an attractive performer, she created a beautifully credible 17 year old ingenue. Her voice was warmer and had less of the pin prick accuracy some singers have brought to the role, but she is a fine musical singer and the performance was something of a triumph.

Philippe Duminy was rather wasted as Fieramosca. As I have said, he was very funny in the role but I wish the director had given him space to explore Fieramosca's other aspects. This is true also of Fernand Bernadi as Balducci. The small roles were also very well cast. The joint choruses of Opéra National du Rhin and Opéra de Nice sang resoundingly.
