Finally, the concert begins with Elegia (2000-2002) for strings. What a relief hearing such an airy, quiet, and meditative piece, with a sometimes rather Japanese touch.

Five Pieces for piano solo demonstrates Silvestrov's earlier style of composition, and is reminiscent of the Lieder of Hugo Wolf. Typical of Silvestrov is the title of the 'Interrupted Sonatine'. In comparison to his newer compositions there are smaller forms, embedded in a big musical bow, but they are not yet as fragile and finally diluted as the more recent works. The pianist Alexei Lubimov is able to play the pianissimo so quietly that he tenderly and sensitively brings out sounds at the limit of human hearing capacity.
