A gala concert presented by Arizona Opera,
reviewed by MARIA NOCKIN

 

On 28 April 2006, Arizona Opera presented a gala concert at the Mesa Arts Center featuring Dolora Zajick and four of this year's Adler Fellows from San Francisco Opera: Rhoslyn Jones and Elza Van den Heever, sopranos, Sean Panikkar, tenor and Eugene Brancoveanu, baritone. Retired television star Hugh Downs served as narrator and provided some interesting background information about each piece performed.

The concert opened with a rousing rendition of the overture to Giuseppe Verdi's opera, La forza del destino, conducted by the opera's artistic director Joel Revzen and played by the company's excellent orchestra. Not only has Revzen brought more capable singers to Arizona, he has made a first class institution of the Arizona Opera orchestra.
