Flair and Fidelity
A concert by the Aroha String Quartet,
enjoyed by HOWARD SMITH
To date Greytown Music Club has done 2006 audiences proud with this season's concerts -- and last week's programme by the Aroha String Quartet [Sunday 23 July 2006, Greytown, New Zealand] was a cracker, received with breathless, pin-drop concentration.
Between these four players there was clearly a rare degree of discursive musical empathy, a striking attention to dynamics, plus a combination of silken tone and robust bravura that held the audience spellbound.
The Aroha String Quartet. From left to right: Beiyi Xue, Haihong Liu, Zhongxian Jin and Jiaxin Cheng. 'Aroha' is the Maori word for 'love'
The quartet members -- leader, Haihong Liu; second violin, Beiyi Xue; viola and sole male, Zhongxian Jin; and cellist, Jiaxin Cheng; are all full-time/or casual players with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and their flair and fidelity to the music was never in doubt.
