As Madame de la Haltière, veteran Canadian mezzo Judith Forst was hysterically funny with her pseudo-dramatic singing and padded bustle. A number of apprentices had parts in this production. Anne-Carolyn Bird and Gabriela Garcia were intriguingly ugly sisters and Justin Peterson was an agile Master of Ceremonies. Aaron M Pegram was a spirited Herald, and Richard Lugo a robust voiced, commanding King.

Cendrillon is a very delightfully entertaining opera that merits a great many more productions than it is currently given. Perhaps this Santa Fe success will allow it to be seen at other companies across the country.

Since 1957, Santa Fe Opera has been attracting visitors every July and August to the company's dramatic adobe theater in the nothern New Mexico mountains. Casts, production teams and audiences are all international. In 2003, the world première of Bright Sheng's Madame Mao received world-wide press attention.

The company's 2007 season (29 June to 25 August) includes the American première of Tan Dun's Tea: A Mirror of Soul, new productions of Puccini's La bohème, Strauss's Daphne and Rameau's Platée, and a revival of Mozart's Così fan tutte.
