On 8 August 2006, Santa Fe Opera presented the two hundred and fifteen year old opera to a modern audience who seemed to appreciate the mix of period costumes and the minimal, but functional, scenery that formed the background for the ever forward moving action. Tobias Hoheisel's costumes represented various periods and were often designed to make a point about the character wearing the outfit. For example, Monostatos is dressed as a Nazi and the Queen of the Night looks like Queen Elizabeth I.

Conductor William Lacey maintained a brisk pace, beginning with a strong overture. Although the tempi sometimes seemed on the fast side, the orchestra played with polished accuracy and a forward thrust that held the interest of the audience.
