'... an orchestra of first-class accomplishment.'

The Ramallah Concert; Knowledge Is The Beginning - A flim by Paul Smaczny. West-Eastern Divan Orchestra / Daniel Barenboim - 93-minute documentary and live concert. © 2005 Warner Classics, Warner Music UK Ltd

It is good that the cover of this Warner Classics DVD, so compelling, so full of hope and yet so tragic, should feature a young man with cello on his back contemplating a section of the Israeli Apartheid Wall, symbol of desperation and political intransigence. Later in the film Barenboim views it from an eminence and asks which is the Israeli side. Both sides, he is told, are Palestinian. It is equally good to watch youthful Palestinians at their favourite pastime, that of football on any dust-covered scrap of land, carefree despite the hideous oppression inflicted on their daily lives [watch and listen -- DVD1 chapter 1, 0:02-0:38].
