<<<  <<  -- 3 --  Karen Haid    NEW MEANINGS?

-------------------------------

Clearly, brutality is a tool for Neuenfels, but what is the limit? I quickly became bored with the phallic symbols in his Magic Flute. And the boundary was more than stretched when one of the three boy soloists in the execution of his role was made to carry the 'bells' around the stage. And was the creation of an acting role to be played by his wife just part of the genius behind this artist's conception?

Loud booing greeted her final bows. Many were obviously there to hear Mozart. In the ladies room line several women were scanning the program for non-existent answers. The idea was raised that we must always search for new meanings. Agreed, but there's nothing wrong with having limits and pointing out that the emperor has no clothes when appropriate.

The next time I go to an opera in Germany, I'm going to read about it first. And I might just select a seat with an obstructed view.
