On 27 March 2007, San Diego Opera presented Il Trovatore in an imaginative production by Stephen Lawless that had been seen a few years earlier in Los Angeles. The quasi-realistic scenery was designed by Benoit Dugardyn and the ethnically diverse, mostly traditional costumes were created by Martin Pakledinaz.

Argentinean tenor Darío Volonté was an energetic Manrico who flooded the hall with resonant virtuousity. A good troubadour is not easy to find, but Volonté filled the bill with ease. Making a most successful début was the attractive, sweet sounding Leonora, Paoletta Marrocu and supplying Count di Luna's dramatic villainy was the baritone, Alexandru Agache, who sang with burnished tones.
