Georgina Allison, manager of Bangalow's popular restaurant, the Urban, is wildly enthusiastic about the town hosting this event: 'business flourishes, and, there's a buzz in the air that feels like a real celebration of Bangalow'. Kathy Bass, owner of the jewelry shop Peekaboo, likes to eavesdrop on the very different kinds of conversations generated by the culture hungry Festival patrons.
Highlights included the performance of Ligeti's String Quartet by the elegant, exquisitely balanced Flinders Quartet from Melbourne who play with a rare sophisticated homogeneity of sound. A kaleidoscopic range of color from the hushed, thin and barely there to a robust, full-blooded attack that almost pushes beyond the limitations of the instruments is exciting. The details compel all the way from the gnashing, biting accents to the swift mercurial shifts. The combo's performance was superbly conversational and demonstrated a powerful fusion.
