There were whispers amongst the cognoscenti at interval that the interpretation, although convincing, was rather more Ortiz than Schubert. How much a performer can invest their own ideas and still convey the mannerisms and context of a composer's music is a contentious issue. But the degree to which this pianist stamps her own character on the repertoire ceased to matter in her magnificent delivery of Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit full of shimmering colour and vitality. So vividly brought to life.

One of the charms of the Medici series is in contemplating how very individual each player is in their approach to interpretation and performance. The similarity of repertoire in this respect at least is a bonus as it highlights the idiosyncrasies of each player. Pianists who have contributed to this series over the last thirteen years include Michael Roll, Piers Lane, Nikolai Demidenko, Freddie Kemph, Geoffrey Tozer and Paul Lewis.
