DaPonte used the one act Gazzaniga opera as the starting point of the libretto he wrote for Mozart and added a great deal to it. Their Don Giovanni was first heard in Prague on 29 October 1787. It was performed in Vienna the following year and in London in 1817. It is interesting to note that the American première, which took place at the Park Theatre in New York City on 7 November 1817, was attended by DaPonte who had moved to the United States by that time and helped arrange for the performance.
