An Auspicious Beginning

The first performance of a brand new opera company
marked by MARIA NOCKIN

What could be more exciting than the first performance of a brand new opera company? The thrill of seeing and hearing the culmination of more than a year of work on the formation of the Phoenix Metropolitan Opera was apparent at the company's performance of Puccini's La bohème on Friday 21 December 2007. It was a mere three days before Christmas Eve, the setting of the opera's second act, and everyone in Phoenix was in a holiday mood. City streets were hung with garlands and the audience was dressed in festive apparel.
