Although Alexander Zemlinsky's opera Der Zwerg ('The Dwarf') has been seen more often than the Ullmann piece, this performance was its US West Coast première. The libretto by Georg C Klaren is based on Oscar Wilde's The Birthday of the Infanta. It questions whether or not we ever see ourselves as others see us.
