Verdi and his wife, Giuseppina, rewrote the scenario in Italian and, after some more help from du Locle, the piece was given to librettist, Antonio Ghislanzoni, who wrote the actual text. Aida was premièred on 24 December 1871 at the Khedival Opera House in Cairo, but the composer was not in attendance. He chose to wait and see the opera's first Italian performance at La Scala the following February.
