-------------------------------

Thankfully we're rescued from the Cingalese (Sri Lankan) spell by Sohn's lightweight concluding item from the pens of Edouard Lalo (1823-1892) and revered violinist-arranger, Josef Szigeti (1892-1973).

Listen -- Lalo arranged Szigeti: Aubade from Le roi d'Ys (track 9, 2:00-2:49)

Aubade is defined as: a song or instrumental composition concerning, accompanying, or evoking daybreak. Lalo's, titled 'Vainement, ma bien-aimée', is from Act Three of his 1888 opera Le roi d'Ys, based on a legend of the drowned King of Ys. (Ys, also spelled Is or Ker-Ys in Breton, is a mythical city built in the Douarnenez Bay in Brittany by Gradlon, or Gralon in Breton, King of Cornouaille, for his daughter Dahut.)

Sohn's four strings and Loeb's keyboard supplant vocal chords and orchestra with engaging musical finesse. Their inventive programme is neat, adroit and truly invigorating.
