Nellie Melba

Nellie Melba, the Australian soprano, was born on 19 May 1861 (as Helen Porter Mitchell) at Richmond, Victoria, and died on 23 February 1931. She swept to stardom quickly and was in demand worldwide, particularly in Italian opera. Her voice was exceptional for purity of line, especially in coloratura parts.
