American memory

To mark the 100th birthday of American composer Aaron Copland (1900-1990) on 14 November 2000, the US Library of Congress Music Division, in association with the National Digital Library Program, has created a new online Aaron Copland Collection.

Although personally uncomfortable with the term, Copland became known as the 'Dean of American Music', having devoted his life to creating a distinctive American style. His Appalachian Spring won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize, and Fanfare for the Common Man has a special place in our minds. His work included ballet, chamber, film, opera, orchestral, solo piano and vocal music.

The Aaron Copland Collection website includes about 1,000 items selected from Copland's correspondence, photographs, writings, and complete sets of music sketches. The correspondence includes letters to Bernstein, Boulanger, Britten, Chávez, Koussevitzky, Piston and Sessions. 86 articles, lectures and speeches (presented online as previously unpublished drafts) reveal something of the creative process.

Visit the Aaron Copland Collection website at memory.loc.gov/ammem/achtml/.
