Berkeley society
A memorial society for neglected British composer Sir Lennox Berkeley (1903-1989) has been established to increase awareness of the music of an important 20th century figure. Berkeley studied in Paris with Boulanger, worked at the BBC and was professor of composition at London's Royal Academy of Music, teaching David Bedford, Richard Rodney Bennett, Nicholas Maw and John Tavener. The society will be chaired by William Whitehead, and the president will be Lady Berkeley. A newsletter will be produced, concerts will be promoted, and there are plans to stage a festival in 2003 for the centenary of the composer's death. Information about joining by writing to Jim Nichol, 63 Luccombe Road, Upper Shirley, Southampton SO15 7RN, UK.
