Nicolai Ghiaurov

The Bulgarian bass-baritone Nicolai Ghiaurov, best known for his King Philipp (Don Carlos), has died in Modena. In 1957, he made his début at the Vienna Opera and soon became one of the biggest opera stars of his time. Legendary were also his performances with the soprano Mirella Freni, with whom he was also living in private life. In 1985, Ghiaruov became an Austrian citizen. His last home was in Modena, where he has unexpectedly died at the age of seventy four.
