Heinz Wallberg

Heinz Wallberg has died in Essen, Germany, at the age of 81. The conductor has been held in high esteem in concert halls all over the world. For almost twenty years, he served as general music director in Essen. He was also very much associated with the Vienna Opera, where Herbert von Karajan invited him in 1959 for the first time. Since then, he conducted more than four hundred performances there. He toured with the Vienna and Bamberg Symphonies, and has countless CDs and television productions to his name.

Wallberg started out as a violinist and trumpeter. At the age of 29, he became the youngest ever music director in Germany when he was offered a position in Ausgburg. He had a reputation as a kind and modest man who did not like to be treated as a star.
