Alexander Brott

The Canadian conductor, composer and violinist Alexander Brott died in Montreal on 1 April 2005, aged 90.

Brott was born in Montreal on 14 March 1915, and, after becoming devoted to music at the age of seven, went on to study at the McGill Conservatory and at Juilliard. He was concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and was also a professor, conductor-in-residence and head of the department of orchestral instruments at McGill University until he retired in 1980. With cellist Lotte Brott, his late wife, he founded the McGill Chamber Orchestra, now in its 65th year, and was its music director. His memoirs, My Lives In Music, were published in March 2005, to celebrate his 90th birthday.
