Woodhouse Opera

George Frideric Handel wrote the masque/opera Acis and Galatea in 1717-8 for the pleasure of the Duke of Chandos, and premièred it on the Duke's estate at Cannons in Edgware, Middlesex, UK. It was his first dramatic work written in English, and the text was by John Gay.

The UK's Woodhouse Opera presents an authentic fully staged open air performance, Sunday 6 September 2009, 4pm in two different locations at the lake/gardens of Woodhouse Copse, a Grade II listed Arts and Crafts House with Gertrude Jekyll gardens. The venue is at Holmbury St Mary, RH5 6NL (between Dorking and Guildford, off the A25 at Abinger Hammer), and the gardens and lake are open for picnics from 2pm.

Natasha Day sings Galatea, with Alexander Cadden as Acis, Jimmy Holliday is Polyphemus and Oli Johnston takes the part of Damon. Craig White plays continuo, and the band is formed from postgraduate students of the Royal College of Music, conducted by Alisdair Kemmel Kitchen. The artistic director is Monika E Saunders.
