Robert Hanson

English composer Robert Hanson's new CD Thanksgiving has been released on Cala Records (CACD77014). Hanson (born 1948) presents two tribute pieces to esteemed colleagues formerly at Dartington College of Arts - Roy Truby and Jack Dobbs. Hanson's music combines influences of Berg, Webern and the post-war avant-garde with an English lyrical impulse, resulting in works with an original tonal and modal sense.

Thanksgiving Music (1994) is a response to the death of Truby, setting a variety of texts concerning mourning, loss and transformation. Sarah Leonard and Jonathan Powell perform this five-movement work, which sets poetry by Christina Rossetti, John Fletcher, William Strode, Gerard Manley Hopkins and Thomas Campian.

The Violin Sonata (1987) was Hanson's gift to Dobbs on the latter's retirement from Dartington, and incorporates references to Dobbs' wide range of musical interests. It's played here by Jane Gordon and Jan Rautio.

Both works receive their first recordings on this disc.
