Tchaikovsky Competition winners

The International Tchaikovsky Competition, first held more than fifty years ago (with just two categories - piano and violin), is a valuable part of Russian musical culture and one of the international music community's major events. It is held once every four years. The fifteenth competition (16 June until 3 July 2015, split, for the first time, between Moscow and St Petersburg and marking the 175th anniversary of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's birth) is now over, apart from two gala concerts. There were four categories, piano, violin, cello and voice, each with separate international juries, and winners were announced yesterday, at the award ceremony on 1 July.

In the piano category, Dmitry Masleev has won first prize and a gold medal; Lucas Geniušas and George Li won second prize and a silver medal; Sergei Redkin and Daniel Kharitonov won third prize and a bronze medal, and Lucas Debargue won fourth prize. Jury members included Dmitry Bashkirov, Boris Berezovsky, Michel Beroff, Peter Donohoe, Sergei Dorensky, Martin Engström, Vladimir Feltsman, Klaus Hellwig, Denis Matsuev, Vladimir Ovchinnikov, Alexander Toradze and Barry Douglas.

No first prize was awarded in the violin category. Yu-Chien Tseng won second prize and a silver medal. Haik Kazazyan, Alexandra Conunova and Pavel Milyukov won third prize and a bronze medal, Clara-Jumi Kang won fourth prize and Bomsori Kim won fifth prize. Violin jury members included Yuri Bashmet, Salvatore Accardo, Liana Isakadze, Leonidas Kavakos, Maxim Vengerov, Vadim Repin, Boris Kuschir, Ilya Kaler, Maxim Fedotov, Vera Tsu Wei Ling, Roman Simovic, Nikolaj Znaider, Mihaela Martin, Victor Tretyakov, Michael Haefliger and James Ehnes.

Winning cellists were Andrei Ionita (first prize and gold medal), Alexander Ramm (second prize and silver medal), Alexander Buzlov (third prize and bronze medal), Pablo Ferrández (fourth prize), Min Seung Kang (fifth prize) and Jonathan Roozeman (sixth prize). Jury members included Alexander Kniazev, Martti Rousi, Sergei Roldugin, Jian Wang, David Geringas, Ivan Monighetti, Lynn Harrell, Myung-Wha Chung, Jan Vogler, Mischa Maisky, Clive Gillinson, Mario Brunello and Wolfgang Bottcher.

In the voice category there were separate awards for male and female voices. Female award winners were Yulia Matochkina (first prize and gold medal), Svetlana Moskalenko (second prize and silver medal), Mane Galoyan (third prize and bronze medal) and Antonina Vesenina (fourth prize). Male award winners were Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar (first prize and gold medal), Chuanyue Wang (second prize and silver medal), Hansung Yoo (third prize and bronze medal) and Dmitry Grigoriev (fourth prize). Jury members included Sarah Billinghurst, John Fisher, Larisa Gergieva, Mikhail Kazakov, Chen-Ye Yuan, Olga Borodina, Eva Wagner-Pasquier, Deborah Voigt, Thomas Quasthoff, Dennis O'Neill, Mikhail Petrenko and Tobias Richter.
