Bartók completed his six books of educational explorations, Mikrokosmos, in 1937 and was already planning a larger work to crown that achievement and adding percussion to enhance the particular qualities of the piano that interested him. Writing in a letter to Fritz Reiner later, he said:

Slowly the conviction grew in me that one piano and the often sharp tones of the percussion were not in balance. Thus I altered my original idea and placed two pianos together with the percussion....
