When I auditioned Barbara Harbach's felicitous recording of harpsichord works by Anna Bon last year, I didn't realize the performer was a prolific composer. Now I know not only that, but also that she is a very good one, assuming you're open to ear-hooking melodies in a setting of mild neo-romanticism. The Soul of Ra for String Orchestra has some of the most strikingly beautiful moments I've heard in a new piece in several years. Harbach here remembers loved ones lost.The theme of the first movement returns in a soaringly optimistic closing...
