HEARING THE IDEAS

MARIA NOCKIN talks to
American composer Ricky Ian Gordon

When I spoke to Ricky Ian Gordon early in the morning of 24 May 2010, he was in Washington DC preparing to open a new musical, Sycamore Trees, for which he wrote the book, the lyrics and the music. The story tells of the Gordon family and growing up on Long Island. It has a relationship to the non-fiction social history Home Fires by Donald R Katz, which was inspired by Gordon's work on the musical. The book describes life on Long Island a few decades ago and it put the suburban community of Island Park on the map.
