Simon Lindley opens Derby Cathedral's
summer season of organ recitals,
reviewed by TONY WESTERMAN

 

Organ recitals are not to everyone's taste, though judging by the full nave on Wednesday of this week [7 July 2010], there are many in Derby who still enjoy being entertained by the organist.

The 2010 season was opened by Simon Lindley, organist of Leeds Parish Church and Leeds Town Hall, an entertainer of the first order, who has the happy talent of combining scholarship and humour in equal measure.

After playing pieces by Jackson, Rheinberger and Schumann, Lindley performed Variations: Victimae paschali laudes by Alan Spedding, a series of short movements, very different in character and style, requiring imaginative registrations...
