Elgar and Bax

A sepia album
from World War I -
heard by
GEORGE BALCOMBE

'... intense emotion, beautifullly replicated ...'

Tasmin Little - Martin Roscoe - Elgar: Violin Sonata Op 82; Bax: Violin Sonata No 2. © 2010 D S Music Ltd

This CD resembles a sepia photo album recovered from an attic. Its images date from 1915 (just after the War began) and from 1917 (just before the War stopped).

The original photos are now faded, but have been recently been restored to form two sets which, although distinct from each other, seem unified by the horrors of World War I.

Of course, the pictures in this CD are not visual but musical. Indeed, this reviewer's metaphorical 'sepia album' has been transformed into a real, post-AD 2000 duo playing the two violin and piano sonatas composed, respectively, by Arnold Bax in 1915 and by Edward Elgar in 1917...
