New York Metropolitan Opera's
Verdi 'Don Carlo' transmission,
seen and heard by MARIA NOCKIN
On 11 December 2010, the Metropolitan Opera transmitted its matinée performance of Verdi's Don Carlo live, in Italian, to cinemas around the world. The new production by Nicholas Hytner is a co-production of the Met, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Norwegian National Opera. Verdi's original five-act version of this opera was sung in French and premièred at L'Opéra in Paris in 1867. A four-act Italian version was premièred in 1884 at La Scala. A hybrid Italian language presentation containing material from both the French and Italian versions was premièred in Modena in 1886...
