reconstructed cantata by Neil Garland
Derby Bach Choir were joined for their Christmas concert this year (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 15 December 2010) by Derby High School Choir and their Head of Music Nic Robinson, whose contribution was the result of a remarkable feat of reconstruction.
Christ is born, a short three-movement cantata by Neil Garland, was composed for a Christmas concert by the National Youth Choir in the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1983. Sadly no copies of the complete score survived a serious flood at the composer's home some years ago, but with only the melody line and a cassette recording of the 1983 performance to go on, Nic Robinson painstakingly transcribed the whole thing, sending each completed section to the composer for his approval...
