NEW YEAR BLUES

A roundup of recent London concerts
by BILL NEWMAN

Konstantin Souhovetski, piano
5 January 2011, Wigmore Hall

Established in the USA, where he studied at Juilliard, the Russian pianist Konstantin Souhovetski is a Laureate at Cleveland, Naumburg and New Orleans (First and Audience Prize). This was his UK début.

The Grainger (Ramble on the last duet from 'Der Rosenkavalier' by Strauss) was a lush arrangement, finely judged and performed in a colourful manner. I thought that I was in for a fine evening's entertainment, but this was not to be.

Schumann's Sonata No 1 in F sharp minor Op 11 is a phenomenally difficult work to bring off, and requires complete control from the pianist...
