Those who like their Carmen to look like an animated bullfight poster are going to be disappointed (Opera North, Theatre Royal, Nottingham, UK, 22 February 2011). We are in Seville, yes, but this is Seville, Ohio, where director Daniel Kramer creates an atmosphere of male fantasies, bullying and simmering violence. In the first two acts, at least, it is a trailer-trash world of lurid colours and equally lurid behaviour...
