MIKE WHEELER listens to the
Czech National Symphony Orchestra

 

Funding problems for the Orchestre National d'Ile de France meant they had to pull out of their advertised concert at the Derby Assembly Rooms (Derby, UK, 1 March 2011), leaving the Czech National Symphony Orchestra to fill the gap, and bringing Norwegian conductor Terje Mikkelsen to the venue for the second time this season.

Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto remained on the programme, but with a change of soloist. Rustem Hayroudinoff's clear sound, suggesting minimal pedalling, and astonishingly precise finger-work, let us hear it as a piece of music, not a flashy showpiece...
