English Touring Opera's 'La Clemenza di Tito',

English Touring Opera's Spring tour includes four remarkably contrasting operas, Tobias Picker's The Fantastic Mr Fox based on Roald Dahl's children's book, Puccini's Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi from Il Trittico and Mozart's penultimate opera La Clemenza di Tito.

James Conway's impressive production of La Clemenza di Tito premièred on Saturday 12 March 2011 at the Hackney Empire [London UK]. Conway and designer Neil Irish set the piece in the 1930s with suggestions of an Italian fascist background, one suitably obsessed with noble Roman forbears. The main visual focus of Act 1 was a monumental head of Tito, in classical style, which was ceremonially unveiled during Tito's first scene. Then in Act 2, the stage was filled by the rubble from the destruction of the head as part of Sesto's insurrection...
