To Suit the Voice

GREGORY MOOMJY takes a sneak peek
at the divas and divos of tomorrow,
as heard at New York Metropolitan Opera's
National Council auditions

I have been an obsessed fan of classical music and opera for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until recent years, however, that I started to fully appreciate certain performances which I consider to be milestones in my well-travelled yet still nascent musical journey. Here is a look at my checklist: first live in HD telecast from The Met, check: Eugene Onegin, Renée Fleming and Dimitri Hvorostovsky were excellent in the final scene; first world premiere -- I got that covered as well: Tan Dun's The First Emperor. The music wasn't so good, but it was a thrill to see Plácido Domingo for the first time. Oh yeah, there's another one, and the list goes on and on...
