Hokey Plot?

Opera North's 'Fidelio'

 

On paper, at least, it would be easy (and some have tried) to dismiss the heroic-prison-rescue plot of Fidelio as just a hokey old melodrama, but Beethoven's score makes you believe every second of it. Musically, Opera North's production (Theatre Royal, Nottingham, UK, 25 May 2011) was as thrilling as you could want. Richard Armstrong's conducting -- from incisive overture to exhilarating final chorus -- was shot through with edge-of-the seat tension and urgency, and the response of singers and orchestra seethed with vitality...
