Like the palace of Versailles, the vast expanse of the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, seeming to stretch endlessly along the River Neva, stands ready for revolution. As the home for one family, however divinely appointed, its scale never made sense. Major rumblings of trouble ahead occurred in 1905, whether in the January massacre portrayed by Shostakovich in Symphony No 11, or in the mutiny on the battleship Potemkin from later in the year...
